Continuing from Wednesday…
As with wooden types of furniture pieces, the American public was beginning to turn away from the traditional Victorian styles during the early part of the 20th century. American’s preferred more simple designs with straighter lines instead of the heavy fabrics and ornate features of the Victorian Era. Around 1910, the Heywood Brother and Wakefield Company began designing Mission style furniture instead. It did not take long for the public to embrace the simplicity and clean lines offered by this style of furniture and the Mission style was quickly a huge hit. In fact, the Mission style is still a style that is preferred by many American’s today.
In 1917, another competitor entered the woven furniture scene. Marshall B. Lloyd invented a machine that wove a man-made fiber out of chemically twisted paper. It did not take long for Heywood Brother and Wakefield Company to realize that they needed this invention in their company so they bought the Lloyd Manufacturing Company in 1921 and changed their name to Heywood-Wakefield Company. By the 1930’s, American interest in wicker and rattan furniture had waned and the company was forced to change manufacturing directions completely. They began making metal and wood chairs until 1979, when the company finally stopped making furniture altogether.
Wicker furniture became a popular American design choice once again in the 1960’s and has remained as a leader to this day. Throughout the years, wicker and rattan furniture has been used in most every room in the home. You can easily find wicker sofas, chairs, tables, dining sets, chaise lounges, bedroom sets, dressers, mirrors, bars, and entertainment centers. Wicker furniture is strong and versatile and stands up to the riggers of daily life. Because of its strength and durability, wicker and rattan furniture works perfectly in a backyard setting as well.

We have beautiful wicker and rattan furniture for both the inside and outside of your home that is sure to bring both beauty and comfort to your living environment. Like many other styles of furniture, the wicker and rattan furniture style has a varied past. It has been reported that wicker furniture first arrived in America along with the pilgrims aboard the Mayflower. The American wicker furniture industry can be traced back to one American in particular. Back in the 1850’s, a grocer named Cyrus Wakefield found large amounts of rattan while visiting the shipping docks at Boston harbor. The strips of rattan were used as straps to hold cargo in place in ships traveling out of Asia. Although he had never seen this material before, he was fascinated by it. He soon decided to sell his grocery store and instead form the Wakefield Rattan Company, which made hand-made baskets and furniture out of this new type of material that he had discovered. It did not take long for Wakefield to have entire cargo ships of rattan being shipped from Asia for his new business adventure. By the 1860’s, with virtually no competition, the Wakefield Rattan Company grew tremendously and was the leading manufacturer of rattan furniture in America.
After the Civil War, the largest wood chair manufacturer in the United States wanted to try their hand at creating rattan furniture. The Heywood Brothers hired an inventor who created a machine that was able to weave the rattan into beautiful furniture pieces. This new invention allowed the Heywood Brothers to offer their furniture at low prices to consumers. After years of competition, the two furniture giants merged in 1897 and were then called the Heywood Brother and Wakefield Company. This powerhouse company remained the leading manufacturer of quality wicker furniture until the late 1920’s.

In continuation from Monday…
Heavy draperies tend to block out too much natural light, so consider using light sheer fabrics instead as your window treatments. Sheers that are available in plain, soft floral designs and simple stripes provide ample ways of allowing natural light into living spaces.
When designing a small living room, consider using a larger piece of furniture, such as an armoire, instead of using several small pieces of furniture within the room. Armoires are perfect for storing a wide variety of items and allow you to keep the room clutter to a minimum; which will make the room appear larger and more comfortable.
When choosing a sofa for a small living room, it’s a good idea to avoid large patterns or stripes which can make a room look much smaller than it actually is. At Grand Furniture Gallery you will find the beautiful Marquette Sofa in Seville Amber. Made of hardwood and pecan veneers, this delightful sofa is offered in your choice of two cozy chenille fabrics, a neutral tan or a rich brown. It’s easy to imagine yourself snuggling up on this charming sofa which would be a great addition for a small living room space. Decorating a small living room, whether it is in a house or an apartment, can be a challenge for some people. It is easy to overcrowd a room with bulky furniture that can make the room look small and cluttered. By making a few simply design compromises; it is easy to make a small living space feel like you are living in a larger living space so you don’t feel cramped.
Here are a few tips to help you…
A room will always look smaller when you cannot see the majority of the floor space that is available. Consider moving furniture out and away from all walkways. Shorter pieces of furniture such as an ottoman, low table or armless chairs will also make the room appear larger than it is. Tall pieces of furniture should always take their place alongside a wall as well. When considering the paint that you will use on your walls, try to keep it within the same color family as any upholstered furniture that you have in the room.
Using mirrors in interior decorating is a trade secret. The days of having a wall of mirrors in the room are long past; but you can make any room look larger by placing a large framed decorative mirror at most any location within the room. Mirrors are not only functional; they also serve as a great way to reflect both natural and artificial light within a room. All rooms will look larger if they are well-lit. It does not matter the light source, so if the lack of windows are a problem, no worries, artificial lighting can still do the trick!
Please check back on Wednesday for the conclusion.

Many people are afraid of mixing different fabrics in a living room and often decide that their main piece of furniture…the sofa…should always be one color with no pattern. Upholstered furniture, with a beautiful pattern can not only help you add splashes of color to the room; it can also become a great accent piece of furniture for the room as well. There are few simple decorating rules to keep in mind when you make your choices though.
Find a patterned sofa that you love and build your room around it. The most important rule when picking accent fabrics is to never pick more than three fabrics for any one room. More than three, will make the room appear to be cluttered and busy and will cause confusion to the eye. It is okay however to pick patterns that vary in size and style. For example, floral, stripe, and plaid all look great together; but you can also substitute another type of pattern instead if you choose. If you are using more than one type of pattern, it is imperative that you have at least one color that is represented in each of the patterns that you choose. That common color enables all of the colors to be tied together and looks pleasing to the eye. Also remember that smaller rooms demand smaller scale patterns, and larger rooms demand larger scale pattern choices.
At Grand Furniture Gallery you will find the San Marcessa Sofa that has beautiful coloring and accent patterns to help add style and dimension to your living space. The smooth faux leather portion of the San Marcessa Sofa looks lovely against the beautiful patterned portion of the upholstery. The sofa has supportive cushions, plush pillows for the back, and the ornate details of the wood make this an elegant addition to any décor. The San Marcessa Collection includes additional pieces to make any room complete. Stop by our store to see the San Marcessa Chair, Ottoman, Loveseat, Accent Chair or the entire Living Room Collection together.

Typically, leather furniture will last longer than its upholstered competitors. Anyone who has ever owned a nice piece of leather furniture can tell you that proper care will not only prolong its life but also keep it looking attractive for many years.
Just like fine wood furniture, it’s important to keep leather furniture away from heat sources. Leather can stiffen, crack and fade when placed too closely to a fireplace or in an area that receives direct sunlight. All leather furniture should be dusted or vacuumed regularly. Accumulated dirt or debris should be removed with a soft cloth that is slightly dampened. Always test an inconspicuous spot to make sure that the leather is not absorbing the water prior to washing the entire surface area though. Spills happen and when they do, you should never wipe leather during the clean up process. Instead use a dry cloth and blot the spill until it is removed.
Leather can be tricky to clean when you have a stubborn stain, but you should never use cleaning solvents, detergents, ammonia or soap on it. These products can all permanently damage the surface of the leather. You should also be mindful of placing any newspapers or other printed materials on leather furniture. Ink dyes will transfer and the remaining stains are very difficult to remove. Most manufacturers will advise you that leather furniture should be conditioned every 6 to 12 months to prolong its life and keep it looking beautiful.
