Bedding Thread Count Explained (Part 2)

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

As previously discussed, thread count is not a good measure for the quality of bed sheets. There are actually many different factors that must be taken into consideration, and one of them is the weaving technique. The weaving technique does not only determine the thread count of a fabric; it also affects the texture, elasticity, and durability.

Basically, there are four different types of weaving methods, and they are percale, jersey, flannel, and sateen. Percale is considered one of the finest types of weave, and it results in a plain and closely woven fabric. Usually, combed and carded cotton is used for percale weaving, and the high thread count makes the fabric soft and silky. Jersey refers to a plain stitch-knitted weaving style, with flatbed, warp, or circular knitting. It produces fabric that is highly elastic and has excellent draping qualities. If you want a fabric that is fluffy and warm, you should opt for one that features flannel weaving. A flannel fabric a medium-weight fabric that is soft and cozy, and it has a raised surface. It is mostly made of cotton and woven in either plain or twill pattern. Sateen refers to a kind of cotton fabric that is very similar to satin. The cotton is mercerized to produce a sheen, and the fabric is soft and lustrous because it is very tightly woven.

When you are buying bedding, you should find out whether the fabric feels comfortable on your skin. The most preferred material is 100% cotton, because it is smooth and soft, and it does not feel sticky on your skin.

Bedding Thread Count Explained (Part 1)

Thread count is one of the major considerations for people who are buying bed sheets. Most consumers think that thread count alone reflects the quality of bed sheets, but this is not true. Thread count only refers to the number of threads that can be found in one square inch of fabric, and a higher count does not mean that the sheet is more durable or comfortable. Here are some of the things that you should consider when buying bed sheets.

One thing you have to know is the ply that is used to make a fabric. Ply means the number of threads that are wrapped together in a single thread. For instance, a single-ply fabric is made up of individual threads, while a 2-ply fabric consists of threads that are created by twisting two single threads together. When you see a thread count of 600 on a fabric, does it mean that it has 600 single threads per inch or 600 2-ply threads per inch? Many manufacturers will multiply the thread count of their double-ply fabrics by two, so that they can fool consumers into thinking that their products have higher thread counts. Fabrics with single ply threads are usually more delicate, while those with 2-ply threads are coarser.

Another factor that you should look into is the thickness of the threads. Bed sheets that are made of thick threads are more durable, but they are not as comfortable as sheets with finer threads.

There are several different types of bed linens for you to choose from, and they include high thread count linens, low thread count sheets, flannel sheets, stain sheets, and silk sheets. High thread count linens are very comfortable because they are silky. However, they are not durable, and they can easily become worn from frequent washing. You will need at least four or five sets of linens to rotate if you want to use high thread count sheets. On the other hand, low thread count sheets can last a long time, but they can be a bit rough on the skin, and they are not recommended for people with sensitive skin.

Flannel sheets are the best option for winter bedding, because they can keep you warn and toasty during winter. If you want to have a seductive set of bed sheets for romantic purposes, you should use satin sheets. However, these sheets can cause sweating, and they should not be used on a daily basis. Silk sheets offer great comfort, and they make a bedroom look more elegant. If you do not mind the hassle of having to dry clean them, they can be the perfect choice for you.
