Bedding Thread Count Explained (Part 2)

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

As previously discussed, thread count is not a good measure for the quality of bed sheets. There are actually many different factors that must be taken into consideration, and one of them is the weaving technique. The weaving technique does not only determine the thread count of a fabric; it also affects the texture, elasticity, and durability.

Basically, there are four different types of weaving methods, and they are percale, jersey, flannel, and sateen. Percale is considered one of the finest types of weave, and it results in a plain and closely woven fabric. Usually, combed and carded cotton is used for percale weaving, and the high thread count makes the fabric soft and silky. Jersey refers to a plain stitch-knitted weaving style, with flatbed, warp, or circular knitting. It produces fabric that is highly elastic and has excellent draping qualities. If you want a fabric that is fluffy and warm, you should opt for one that features flannel weaving. A flannel fabric a medium-weight fabric that is soft and cozy, and it has a raised surface. It is mostly made of cotton and woven in either plain or twill pattern. Sateen refers to a kind of cotton fabric that is very similar to satin. The cotton is mercerized to produce a sheen, and the fabric is soft and lustrous because it is very tightly woven.

When you are buying bedding, you should find out whether the fabric feels comfortable on your skin. The most preferred material is 100% cotton, because it is smooth and soft, and it does not feel sticky on your skin.

Thread count is one of the major considerations for people who are buying bed sheets. Most consumers think that thread count alone reflects the quality of bed sheets, but this is not true. Thread count only refers to the number of threads that can be found in one square inch of fabric, and a higher count does not mean that the sheet is more durable or comfortable. Here are some of the things that you should consider when buying bed sheets.

One thing you have to know is the ply that is used to make a fabric. Ply means the number of threads that are wrapped together in a single thread. For instance, a single-ply fabric is made up of individual threads, while a 2-ply fabric consists of threads that are created by twisting two single threads together. When you see a thread count of 600 on a fabric, does it mean that it has 600 single threads per inch or 600 2-ply threads per inch? Many manufacturers will multiply the thread count of their double-ply fabrics by two, so that they can fool consumers into thinking that their products have higher thread counts. Fabrics with single ply threads are usually more delicate, while those with 2-ply threads are coarser.

Another factor that you should look into is the thickness of the threads. Bed sheets that are made of thick threads are more durable, but they are not as comfortable as sheets with finer threads.

Tips for Decorating Small Spaces (Part 2)

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

The right amount and placement of lighting can make a room appear bigger. If you have a really small room, you should use as much lighting as possible. The best types of lighting for enhancing the space of a room are overhead fixtures and wall sconces, but you can also add a table lamp or two to achieve better results. Also, make sure that there is enough light coming through the window. It is recommended that you use a thin and light-colored curtain, because such a curtain will allow sunlight to flood into the room and make it look more spacious.

If you are planning to hang decorative items, such as artworks, posters and photographs, on the walls of your room, you should take care not to clutter the walls with too many items. Having just one or two pieces on each wall is good enough, and you have to make sure that their sizes are proportionate to the size of the room. A large poster on the wall of a small room will make the room look even smaller. It is also a good idea to place mirrors in the room, because their reflections can create an illusion of space. Mirrored furniture can be a great addition to a small room.

If you are looking for furniture pieces for decorating a small room, Grand Furniture Gallery has plenty of high quality and affordable furniture pieces that are suitable for your purpose.

Whether you are living in a big house or small apartment, there may be rooms or spaces in your home that feel a bit cramped. While there is nothing much that you can do to expand the actual areas of the spaces, you can actually make them look and feel more spacious. Here are some useful tips on how to decorate small spaces in a home.

Before you start decorating a small room, you should clean out the clutter first. Excessive furniture and objects can certainly make a space feel cramped, and you can create more floor space by removing things that you do not need, or storing them in a place where they cannot be seen. Use shelves or storage boxes to store your things. A little organization will go a long way to enhance space in your room.

The first thing that you have to consider when decorating a small space is the color of the walls and furniture. Deep and dark tones will make a room look smaller. You should opt for light colors, such as cream, light yellow, or icy blue, because these colors can create an airy and bright ambience, which is perfect for a small room. Also, you should buy furniture pieces that are of the same color as the walls in your room, because uniformity in color will enhance space. Breaking up a room with two or more different colors will make it feel more cramped.

When you are buying a home office chair, you should make sure that the chair fits your size and body shape. Most office chairs come with standard-sized seats that can accommodate most people, and the heights of the seats can be adjusted to suit the needs of different users. The seat should have the right width, so that you will not feel too restricted while you are seated. For optimal comfort, it is recommended that you get a home office chair with armrests, because armrests can help to reduce tension in the shoulders and neck. Also, you should choose a chair that provides good lumbar support, preferably one that features adjustable backrest.

If you wish to order home office chairs online, there is a wide selection of desks chairs and bankers chairs at Grand Furniture Gallery for you to choose from.

Mirrors have been essential functional items in households since a long time ago, but now, they are widely used as decorative items as well. They do not only serve to provide a reflection of your appearance; they can also reflect your personality. There is a wide array of decorative mirrors available today, and finding the right one will certainly add pizazz to your home decor.

When choosing a decorative mirror for a room, you should consider the size and decor of the room. One of the unique functions of a mirror is that it can enhance the spaciousness of a room. If a room has limited space, you should use a free-standing, wall-mounted, or table top window. It is a good idea to place the mirror across from the window, as this will create a bright and cheerful ambiance in the room. Floor mirrors are recommended for larger rooms.

Decorative mirrors come in a wide range of artistic frames these days, and some of them are very elaborately crafted. It is important to select a mirror that blends well with the decor in the room. If you are using contemporary furniture, a traditional styled mirror may not be an appropriate choice. A decorative mirror should accentuate the overall appearance of the room and reflect your personal taste and style.

Grand Furniture Gallery in North Carolina has an excellent selection of decorative mirrors for you to choose from, including Bob Mackie, Collette, Britannia, and Versailles mirrors.

Just one of our children's furniture sets.

Children are people too. They need their own personal space where they can hang out and relax. They need a cozy place where they can fantasize and develop their imagination. They need a place where they can express their tastes and preferences just like us grownups.

That’s why children’s furniture is so important. Allowing your child to participate in selecting some of the furnishings will make them feel big and responsible. They will learn the important lesson that they need to literally live with their choices. Shopping with your child is also an opportunity to teach them esthetics and how to balance it with functionality.

Of course, you as the parent will want to ensure that they are getting furniture that will provide them a healthy space to live and grow. Pay careful attention to their beds, mattresses and bedding accessories. Additionally, you will want to plan for their future when they might need more closet more clothes or equipment for one of their hobbies. Their desk should be comfortable for them to work on homework or other projects.

Perhaps include a design that accommodates a computer and keyboard.  For younger children, having quiet time for bedtime is a great way to wind down before going to sleep.

You can also plan to have a comfy recliner for you to hang out there until the little ones are asleep. Using dimmers or bedside lamps is a good way to send the kids a message that it’s time to get ready for sleep.

Whatever you are looking for, Grand Furniture Gallery will provide you with a huge selection of functional and beautiful furniture.

The Traditional Furniture Evolution

Monday, February 1st, 2010

Traditional BedIt’s no doubt that the traditional old world style of furniture was designed to impress.  Traditional furniture was originally designed for European royalty from the 17th to the 19th century.  Luxurious furniture was created by using intricate and formal finishes that were rich and dark.  Cherry, walnut, dark oaks, and mahogany were the desired woods that were used.  The woods were often stained with medium to dark finishes and you could often find certain pieces adorned with marble.  In traditional furniture you can expect to find curved or fluted legs and ball and claw feet as well.

The Campaign and Plantation style of traditional furniture evolved from colonial expeditions and wartime. It differed from the old world styles as furniture pieces often had legs that were able to be removed or folded down entirely.  As opposed to the intricate details of the old world style, the Campaign and Plantation style furniture had simple details and cleaner lines. You could often find these pieces with hidden compartments and rich textures or even animal prints too.

The Early American style of traditional furniture held its roots from the traditional old world style, but were scaled down for the more simplified American desires.  Early American furniture featured medium to dark finishes on cherry, walnut, oak, mahogany and pine woods.  Many furniture pieces were also painted and contained spindles and finials.

All varieties of traditional furniture remain a popular design choice in today’s world.  At Grand Furniture Gallery you will find many exquisite furniture pieces, designed in the traditional style that is sure to make your home look absolutely divine.  Stop by our store to see our beautiful selection of traditional furniture for the bedroom, dining room, office, entertainment centers and occasional furnitureGrand Furniture Gallery takes pride in the quality name brand furniture that we offer.  All of our products come straight from North Carolina and are offered at tremendous discounts everyday.
